We had a sensational start to our learning about animals on Tuesday 18th April with a visit to Cannon Hall Farm. The children started their day visiting the farm animals and their young. The children saw horses, foals, pigs, piglets, Highland cattle, alpacas, lamas and so much more. The children listened attentively to the farm guides who taught the children the names of the young animals, how old they were, what they ate and how to care for them. The children asked interesting questions to further develop their knowledge and understanding. The farm staff were amazed by the children’s thought provoking questions and they commented how well the children listened and they described their behaviour as exceptional.
The children enjoyed a picnic lunch outdoors with their friends in the wonderful sunshine before visiting the reptile and mammal houses and the roundhouse – where we observed pregnant horses, sheep, lambs and goats. The children loved observing the reptiles including iguanas, frogs, an African land snail, armoured turtles and huge insects. They were fascinated by the ants and how strong they were. The children enjoyed the mammal house which featured a nocturnal environment where children were able to observe animals in their natural habitats. Finally the children enjoyed playing on the adventure playground before returning back to school. The children were a credit to our school.
Back at school the children have been writing about their visit to Cannon Hall farm and about their favourite animals. They have been drawing and painting their favourite animals too. This week children will be using their new knowledge of animals and their young to sort animals and write and draw about what farm animals eat and will learn about their habitats.
