We had another fabulous week at Forest Schools. Here are some of the activities we did.
In science, we were introduced to the words ‘mini beast’ and ‘habitat’. We talked about what these words mean. We shared the names of mini beasts that we know exist in the garden already and searched for them. We used our mini beast habitats’ sheet to record where they were found. We then talked about WHY they lived there and what they needed to survive.
As a group we looked at some pots and dishes by the potters Bernard Leach, Penny Withers and Debbie Barker. We talked about the colours and patterns on the pots and dishes. Mrs Cheetham then showed us how to make a coil pot which is very different to a pinch pot! You have to roll out the clay and build it up in sections to make your pot. We practised making joins using slip and smoothing our pot.
Our pinch pots from last week had dried out, so we painted them with brightly coloured acrylic paint.
We continued to look at the Bees in the garden and the different parts of the hive – it is their habitat. We discussed different bees and their roles in the hive. We also saw a Queen Bee and talked about her role in the hive.
We worked with Mrs Platts looking at plants and flowers in and around the school garden. We discussed the following words: Reproduce, Flower, Nectar, Pollen, Pollinated, Seeds, Insects, Flying, Scent, Colour… And how they are all part of how flowering plants reproduce.
We also made chocolate courgette cake. Some of us were unsure about trying it at first, however every single one of us LOVED it!
