We had a sensational start to our new ‘Sheffield’ theme by going on a coach tour of Sheffield. We visited Weston Park and the City Centre to look at Sheffield’s geographical features, including the physical and human features. We had to keep our eyes peeled both on and off the coach so we could complete our challenge eye spy sheets. We had a fantastic time and have learned so much already about the city we live in.
We learned that Sheffield is built on seven hills and that Stannington is on one of these hills! We also learned that Sheffield has five rivers and gets its name from the River Sheaf.
We noticed that the area surrounding Stannington is very green with lots of physical features like farmland and rivers. In comparison the City Centre was very different. It had lots of human features like buildings and roads. Some of the buildings we saw were from the past like the Lyceum theatre and Sheffield Cathedral. Other buildings like the ‘Cheese Grater’ car park and the Winter gardens are newer and much more modern.
We also learned that Sheffield has lots of geographical features including hills, rivers, forests, urban areas and farmland. Sheffield is a very green city. Did you know that Sheffield has over two million trees, which is more than any city in Europe per each person! There are 4 trees to each person in Sheffield.
We can’t wait to continue our upcoming geography and history learning about Sheffield.
